The day started with a pre-dawn birthday wake-up call. A knock on our door for a medical emergency - a woman needing her very stuck prolapsed (fallen out) uterus manually reduced back into her body. Thankfully after the task was completed there was time to get back right at sunrise to my waiting birthday breakfast! Homemade pancakes, homemade maple syrup, and the best fresh coffee in the world!
Kristi and the girls surprised me with a visit over tea time with all the clinic staff. After finishing our morning at 1 PM, I was greeted back home with delicious Ethiopian cuisine: atkilt wot (vegetable stew) and shiro (blended spicy chickpeas) with injera. This is the most common fare around here and we eat this every day for lunch. But it's still a favorite!
I was gifted an afternoon off work on account of my birthday and I took a blessed nap (my first here in Langano). Then special time with the kids consisted of baboon and warthog hunting. The sounder (name for a group of warthogs) of one dozen hogs spotted us from 100 meters away and ran with tails held high! Charlotte couldn't stop grinning. We love warthogs - if you look closely my birthday pancake has a picture of a warthog with tusks on it!
Here's to a good year. Cheers!
